Three documentaries from the Tribeca Film Festival 2024.
They’re Here is some pleasant folk in upstate New York who believe they have crossed paths with UFOs, knowledge that looks like something of a burden while they’re out just trying to get the groceries or similar.
Brats involves Andrew McCarthy tracking down some other members of the 1980s Brat Pack of young actors and asking whether they’re still as irritated about the label as he is. On the whole, they are not. You assume the producers would have sacrificed a large mammal to get Tom Cruise involved - he is absent, so The Outsiders goes unremarked. McCarthy deserves peace, but the fame they’re talking about and the way it came to them seems so dated that the thing should have been shot in sepia tone.
S/He Is Still Her/e tries to contain enough of Genesis P-Orridge to make an “Official” label legitimate; a tall order, but the film has the family connections to justify it. P-Orridge’s place in the network connecting William S Burroughs and John Peel and the Conservative Party is an authentic legacy while UK viewers will be reminded of the 1970s period when the country was scared of its own shadow and the government tried to beat up the arts, so not at all like now.
